Amanda’s work is concerned recording, negotiating and understanding the past. Her previous photographic and mixed media work has variously explored childhood cancer, disease and medicine, emigration, oral history and museology.
Amanda’s work has used photography and mixed media from digital media and biomedical imaging techniques to hand crafted materials such as stone, fabric and liquid photo emulsion.,
Her practice encompasses socially engaged and collaborative activities. Her approach as an artist is research based and often involves working with archival material and developing long-term projects.
Her work is currently exploring the collection and classification of plants, developing ideas around the relationship between botany and colonialism, examining ideas of history, landscape and the definition of place, botanical collecting, nomenclature and gardening as a statement of ownership or belonging.
Amanda is interested in unsettling our assumptions about the significance of familiar objects and shifting our thinking about our relationship to the past.
